Description
The profitability of aquaculture operation depends to a great extent on the quality of water and soil and its proper management. The undigested feed, excreta, dead and decaying organic matters settle down at the bottom of the pond. This leads to poor pond bottom and water quality. Moreover, they release toxic gases like ammonia, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen sulphide etc. causing adverse effect on growth, health and livability. The putrefaction of proteins by bacteria results in the formation of ammonia while reduction of carbohydrates liberates methane and carbon dioxide. For the formation of ammonia from proteins, oxygen is consumed and thus dissolved oxygen in the pond is reduced. Methane is directly harmful to aqua species, while carbon dioxide forms carbonic acid, which deteriorates the water pH and quality. The poor water quality leads the aquatic species susceptible to various pathogenic infections. It is essential to reduce the levels of these toxic substances to minimize growth depression, disease incidence and mortality in fish, prawns and shrimps. (APPROX PRICE)
